At a recent 5th Ward neighborhood meeting, questions were asked about what will happen if the Aurora Election Commission (AEC) is abolished. The Kane County Clerk, Mayor Irvin, and the Kane County Board Chairman have agreed to establish a satellite office in downtown Aurora. The County Clerk has also agreed to provide services at this office that the AEC cannot offer. Those include, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and passports. The County Clerk has also agreed to provide a voter mobile to accommodate those who have difficulty traveling. Last year the city’s portion of the expense to fund the AEC was over $526,000.

As we have seen with past referendums, the wording at times can be confusing. A “yes” vote means that you agree that the AEC should be closed. A “no” vote means that should remain as is since 1934.

For more information with regards to costs and how the AEC is governed, go online to the city’s website and type Aurora Election Commission in the search box and it will provide a link to click that will take you to the information page.

The election is March 20th.
